About Mayor Mary Esther Reed
Mary Esther Reed is a lifelong resident of Smyrna, proud graduate of Smyrna High School and Middle Tennessee State University. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, M.Ed. Administration and Supervision, and Ed. S. Administration and Supervision from MTSU.
Professionally, Mayor Reed is the owner of The Learning Circle, an educational supply store. She taught kindergarten at Smyrna Primary and John Colemon Elementary Schools. Her passion for youth and education is evident both in her work in the classroom and as a small business owner.
Always True Blue, Mayor Reed proudly serves MTSU as a past president of the Blue Raider Athletic Association, past president of the National Alumni Association, former board member of the Foundation, and Centennial Committee. In addition to her commitment to MTSU, Mayor Reed has served on numerous non-profit boards across Rutherford County. While serving on the board of the Boys and Girls Club, she was part of the team that led the capital campaign to fund the construction of the Smyrna Unit.
Mayor Reed’s political career began with her election to Smyrna Town Council in 2003. She served as the Vice Mayor from 2009 – 2013. Mary Esther became Mayor in 2013, and has the privilege of being the first female to serve Smyrna in that capacity.
As Mayor, Reed has the opportunity to serve on numerous boards related to local government. She is part of the Middle Tennessee Mayors’ Caucus, Past Chair of the Middle Tennessee Metropolitan Planning Organization Transportation Policy Board, serves as the Treasurer of the Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC), Past Chair of the GNRC Project Delivery Task Force, and serves on the Middle Tennessee Regional Transportation Authority.
Mayor Reed believes that Smyrna remains a small town at heart despite tremendous growth. She lives her philosophy of promoting a sense of community through neighbor helping neighbor. In the aftermath of the June 2, 2016, tragic in-flight accident of United States Marine Corps Captain Jeff Kuss, Mayor Reed responded to the community’s desire to construct a memorial in his honor. Mayor Reed chaired the committee of local community leaders and Town of Smyrna personnel, successfully raising $1.4 million to construct the Captain Jeff Kuss USMC Memorial in Lee Victory Recreation Park.
Mayor Reed is married to Britt and is the proud mother of Parker Bell.
