The Smyrna Fire Department formed its Child Safety Program in March of 2023 to provide caregivers assistance with the installation of car seats and to provide safety information. Lt. Jeremy Stokes organized the department's new program. Smyrna Fire Department currently has 15 Technicians and 3 Technician Proxies. These technicians received their certifications through the Tennessee Highway Safety Office through a four-day class covering various car seat installations across several vehicle manufacturers. Our technicians have a recertification process that is completed every two years to ensure that we are updated with new technologies and changes from vehicle manufacturers. Technician Proxies can observe and assist Technicians with car seat installs for recertification.
Car seats offer multiple challenges when installing them in vehicles. Which car seat will work with my vehicle? How many car seats can my vehicle have installed and where? These are questions that our program can assist the caregiver in answering. The Smyrna Fire Department hosts several community events along with car seat check stations yearly, providing a convenient opportunity for caregivers to seek assistance. Caregivers needing help with car seat installations or checks are welcome to stop by any of our six fire stations, although appointments are encouraged. Our Technicians are spread throughout our department across 3 different shifts and at various fire stations. The Smyrna Fire Department looks forward to assisting your family with your safety needs along with offering various other safety programs through the Tennessee Highway Safety Office in the future.
