Wastewater Treatment Plant
- The Wastewater Treatment Plant for the Town of Smyrna is committed to serving the citizens of Smyrna as well as protecting the environment, receiving streams, and aquatic life.
- The facility uses a biological treatment process with extended aeration basins and is currently rated for 5.86 MGD. We are undergoing expansion to 9 MGD to better serve our residents and industries.
- The biological process efficiently produces high-quality effluent, which is discharged into Stewarts Creek. Often, this treated water is of higher quality than the creek water itself.
- Our grade 4 facility is operated by certified grade 3 and 4 operators. We use ultraviolet (UV) disinfection instead of chlorine, offering equally effective results with increased safety for plant staff.
- The reclaimed water system supports irrigation for the golf course, Stonecrest Hospital, and several businesses—providing an affordable solution.
- We operate a pre-treatment program for industries and a F.O.G. (Fats, Oils, and Grease) program for local restaurants. Citizens are reminded not to pour grease down drains to protect the system.
2024 Expansion Project
In 2024, Smyrna completed a significant expansion of its Wastewater Treatment Plant—a project aimed at enhancing system performance, meeting stringent environmental standards, and preparing for long-term population and economic growth.
This critical upgrade improves the plant’s efficiency, increases treatment capacity, and ensures that Smyrna continues to deliver reliable and sustainable wastewater services to residents and businesses.
In the featured video, we break down the scope of the project, explain the technological advancements included, and outline the total investment involved.
