Our Form of Government
The Town of Smyrna operates under the Council-Manager form of government. This structure combines the leadership of elected officials (Town Council) with the managerial experience of an appointed Town Manager who oversees the delivery of public services.
Council Members are policy makers elected to represent the community. The Town Manager is appointed by the Town Council to carry out policy, lead Town departments, and ensure services are delivered effectively.

Our History
The Town of Smyrna finds its roots in the mid 1800s as an agrarian community with many large farms and plantations. One of the more significant plantations, the Sam Davis Home, is Smyrna's most historic landmark and is designated as a state historical site.
The railway also played an important role. Smyrna first incorporated in 1869; its original charter was rescinded a few years later. In 1915, the town incorporated again, adopting a mayor and commission form of government. On March 14, 2000, a new charter was adopted and Smyrna moved to a city manager form of government.
Agriculture remained a primary economic activity until the establishment of the Army/Air Base in 1941. The closure of the Sewart Air Force Base created economic challenges, but community leaders worked to recruit new industries and jobs, contributing to strong growth in later decades.
Smyrna’s strategic geographic location, utilities, and transportation access (air, road, and rail) continue to make it an attractive location for business and industry.
