In 1913, Julius Rosenwald, a clothes manufacturer and co-owner of Sears Roebuck and Company, teamed with Booker T. Washington to improve education for African Americans. The results were available grants for school construction in the south and southwest. The Smyrna Rosenwald School was one of 5,000 + Rosenwald schools built in the early 1900’s. The Rosenwald school was built in Smyrna in 1927. There were five teachers at Smyrna Rosenwald, which was the largest school for African-Americans in Rutherford County. The school remained open until 1960 when it was relocated to Old Nashville Highway.

In 2000, the Town of Smyrna received a 7-acre land donation from the heirs of D.E. Coleman. An additional 9.3 acres of land was later purchased from the heirs of Leon Alford to build Hilltop Park. Hilltop Park opened in 2003. A committee of former Rosenwald School students and community members then formed the Hilltop-Rosenwald Historical Committee. The committee along with the Town of Smyrna began planning the construction of Rosenwald Community Building, a replica of the Smyrna Rosenwald School. On July 23, 2005, the community center opened and is now available to the community for rent and stands as a historical dedication to the Rosenwald schools.
